Anne Hathaway has revealed that she listened to “American Requiem” by Beyoncé on repeat, in preparation for her role as a pop star in her upcoming movie, Mother Mary. In a recent Q&A session on Tuesday, moderated by Variety‘s Jem Aswad, Hathaway gushed about the pop icon and explained how her artistry helped her tap into her new role.
“Her technique in that song is so mesmerizing and astonishing,” Hathaway said. The Devil Wears Prada star continued, “And listening to her phraseology, her musicianship, understanding the history of her voice that had led her to be able to make that sound that is so still, so present.”
Hathaway continued praising the “Single Ladies” hitmaker, saying, “I studied that, and I appreciated that Beyoncé can be a [powerful] vocalist, but she also knows how to be still.” She added, “And I thought, okay, maybe there’s something to be said about having a sweet, still voice, maybe I can work with this. But learning pop phrasing was a really big deal — that was like learning a new language.”
Speaking with PEOPLE a few days ago, Hathaway also shared that she sought advice from Charli XCX as well, who provided one of the songs on Mother Mary. “The person that I spoke to was Charli… I wanted to talk to her about the music, she wrote such amazing music that I was going to perform,” the actress revealed.
Hathaway further shared that the “360” singer gave her insight into what it is like being a pop star. “But I also just had a lot of questions for her about what her life was like, what the experience of being a pop star was,” the actress said.
