Netflix is about to lose a fan-favorite Canadian series, as all five seasons of the sitcom headlined by an MCU star will soon exit the platform. Despite an overwhelmingly positive reception and the network renewing the series for a sixth installment, it ended abruptly after Season 5.

Kim’s Convenience leaves Netflix in June

Kim’s Convenience Seasons 1-5 will be leaving Netflix’s platform on Monday, June 1, 2026. It stars Simu Liu, known for playing Shang-Chi in the MCU.

The show centers on the Kim family, Korean immigrants who run a small convenience store in Toronto. The story revolves around Mr. Kim (Appa) and Mrs. Kim (Umma), the owners, and their two children: Jung, their estranged son, and Janet, their daughter, who is reluctant to take over the store. It explores their personal relationship along with tackling some important social themes.

It is based on Canadian playwright Ins Choi’s 2011 work of the same name. He also co-developed the show with Kevin White for CBC Television. The cast features Simu Liu as Jung, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Appa, Jean Yoon as Umma, Andrea Bang as Janet, Andrew Phung as Arnold “Kimchee” Han, and Nicole Power as Shannon.

Kim’s Convenience premiered on CBC Television with two back-to-back episodes on October 11, 2016. Season 1 received an incredible reception from both critics and viewers alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a perfect critics’ score of 100%, while the user score is slightly lower at 91%.

Each season comprised 13 episodes, airing weekly, for a total of 65 episodes. The finale, titled “Friends and Family,” aired on April 13, 2021. However, this was not meant to be the show’s conclusion.

In an Instagram post, the show’s official statement read that the showrunners had walked away from the roles after five seasons for undisclosed reasons. Several cast members, including Liu, expressed their disappointment.

Disappointing news today.

I’m heartbroken. I feel like my journey with Jung was cut short. I feel like you, the fans, deserved better. But I’m proud of all that we accomplished together in 5 seasons.

Thanks for all your love and support. This isn’t goodbye, only #OKSeeYou. pic.twitter.com/c1LAg0F58m

It was later reported that there were many behind-the-scenes problems, with the production team reportedly being “overwhelmingly white.” This is in addition to highly racist storylines and ignoring the cast’s creative feedback (via BBC).
