Two Alexandra Daddario fantasy movies have emerged as streaming successes, drawing strong viewership on Netflix. Based on popular books, both turned out to be moderate box-office triumphs but suffered mixed-to-negative critical reception.
Two Percy Jackson movies are taking over streaming on Netflix
As of June 17, 2026, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters are the #3 and #4 movies on Netflix, as per FlixPatrol. Accordingly, both are surpassed in viewership by Maternal Instinct and Flowers in the Attic, which maintain their #1 and #2 positions, respectively.
However, they outperform the other six movies listed. These include Colors of Evil: Black, Office Romance, Ticket to Paradise, GOAT, Fast Charlie, and Song Sung Blue.
The original film, directed by Chris Columbus, is based on Rick Riordan’s 2005 book of the same name. Meanwhile, the sequel, helmed by Thor Freudenthal, adapts the 2006 novel. 20th Century Fox distributed both in theaters. Alexandra Daddario stars alongside Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, and Jake Abel.
The Lightning Thief premiered in theaters on February 12, 2010. Following its release, it performed modestly at the box office, raking in roughly $226.4 million against its $95 million budget (via Box Office Mojo).
However, it didn’t fare well with critics and audiences, who criticized the script and its unfaithfulness to the book. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has a 48% rotten rating but a superior yet mediocre 53% audience score. Meanwhile, Metacritic has assigned it a 47 Metascore and a 4.9 user score, both denoting “mixed or average” reception.
Meanwhile, Sea of Monsters released three years later on August 7, 2013. Like its predecessor, it was a modest box office performer. Made on a $90 million budget, it grossed roughly $200.9 million globally (via The Numbers).
Moreover, it also garnered mixed-to-negative reviews. The action sequences were praised, while the plot and characterization were criticized. On Rotten Tomatoes, it received a comparatively lower yet still rotten 43% rating, but a bit higher, albeit mediocre, 54% audience score. Meanwhile, Metacritic has given it a “generally unfavorable” Metascore of 39 and a “mixed or average” user score of 4.9.
