A scammer impersonated Steve Burton, who plays Jason Morgan on General Hospital, tricking a Los Angeles fan out of all her savings. The culprit initially earned the victim’s trust by sparking an online relationship. He claimed that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her and fool her into believing their romance was real. The victim’s daughter later took the case to the police, only to learn that the scammer had created a deepfake video of the actor, cloning his face and voice.

Here are the details of the case.

AI version of Steve Burton makes General Hospital fan lose life savings

The ABC 7 News recently reported the case of a woman named Abigail, who lost all her money to the AI version of General Hospital star Steve Burton.

The scam was initiated last October, when the culprit connected with her on Facebook Messenger and sent her AI videos. Their conversations later moved to WhatsApp. They struck up an online romance, which Abigail, who struggles with mental illness and Bipolar 1 Disorder, found real.

The scammer, posing as Burton, pretended to be in love with her and claimed that he wanted to spend his life with her. One of the messages read, “‘Steve Burton and Abigail Burton’ sounds like a dream come true.”

The matter escalated when Abigail fell for his story of having lost his home in the L.A. Fires. As per the police report, Abigail sent at least $81,304 in cash, gift cards, and Bitcoin to the scammer. She believed that he would buy a home for them. This led to her bankruptcy, which she will have to file now.

The situation got much worse when Abigail sold her condo for $350,000. She was about to send her money to Burton’s impersonator, but thankfully, her daughter, Vivian Ruvalcaba, interrupted. She took the videos, received by her mother, to ABC’s 7 On Your Side, whose experts investigated the authenticity of the video. They confirmed that the videos were created by AI.

Further, 7 On Your Side Investigates reached out to the real Steve Burton, who revealed that he had heard of such scams about people luring victims by pretending to be him. Abigail’s family decided to go public with their story to create awareness about such cyber scams. They have also filed a lawsuit related to the sale of the condo.
