Ahead of Steven Spielberg‘s upcoming film Disclosure Day’s release, his previous sci-fi movie has emerged as a streaming hit on HBO Max. The 2018 film is based on the novel by Ernest Cline. It centers on a teenager competing in a high-stakes treasure hunt inside a VR game.

Ready Player One returns to streaming popularity

According to FlixPatrol’s data for June 10, Ready Player One is #10 on HBO Max’s Top 10 Movies in the United States. The film hit the streaming platform at the beginning of this month. The streaming resurgence appears to be in anticipation of Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day this week.

Meanwhile, HBO Max’s documentary, Earth, Wind & Fire (To Be Celestial vs. That’s the Weight of the World), has secured the top spot on the Top 10 Movies chart. Rounding out the top five are Matt Damon’s Contagion at #2, Alicia Vikander’s Tomb Raider at #3, Viggo Mortensen’s A History of Violence at #4, and Dwayne Johnson’s Rampage at #5.

Ready Player One is based on Ernest Cline’s debut novel of the same name. Spielberg directed the film from a screenplay by Cline and Zak Penn. He also co-produced the film under his banner, Amblin Entertainment.

The film takes place in a dystopian future and centers on 18-year-old orphan Wade Watts, who lives with his aunt and her boyfriend. To escape his reality, Wade spends most of his time in OASIS, a virtual reality universe. When the OASIS creator James Halliday dies, he leaves behind a contest to find three hidden keys. Whoever finds all three keys will control the OASIS. Wade joins the contest, competing with millions of people across the globe.

Ready Player One’s cast features Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Simon Pegg, Hannah John-Kamen, Lena Waithe, and Mark Rylance, among others.

The film debuted in theaters on March 29, 2018, and received positive reviews from both critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 71% Tomatometer score and a 77% Popcornmeter score. Meanwhile, it grossed $607.8 million at the global box office against a reported $175 million budget. It also earned one Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects, though it lost to Ryan Gosling’s First Man.
