Not every fantasy book needs magic, but many of the most enduring do. Magic systems, and how they're crafted, are some of the most memorable parts of a fictional world, and they must be believable for readers to drop into the story. However, this doesn't mean they have to be over-explained or rely on concrete rules. Soft magic systems can be perfect, if done right.
