The sci-fi genre tends to conjure up images of epic sagas like Star Trek and Star Wars, and complicated lore-filled adventures that take place over generations, resulting in long-running TV shows like Doctor Who. This sense of scale may be one of the reasons why sci-fi series that have been canceled before their time are often mourned for decades by their fandom. Shows like Firefly represent lost potential, but are still worth watching despite their early cancelations. Still, the focus on length overlooks a long-running staple of the sci-fi genre, which is the miniseries.
