Three episodes into its run, Lanterns has quickly become the strongest argument that despite a rocky start, James Gunn's rebooted DC universe knows exactly what it's doing. Superman had its moments, and the shared universe strategy is becoming more clear. But now, Lanterns, feels like the premium tier of everything James Gunn has built so far, a slow-burn detective series that trusts its audience enough to withhold spectacle in place of atmosphere. HBO's decision to give it a Sunday night slot is already paying real dividends, positioning the show alongside the network's prestige drama lineage instead of treating it as just another TV comic book adaptation.
