The birth of the Federal Bureau of Investigation was most recently depicted in Martin Scorsese’s true crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon, in which FBI agents are sent to Oklahoma to investigate the murder of Native Americans. This remains a particularly intriguing chapter in modern American history, with several filmmakers having revisited it in the last few years. In 2009, Michael Mann released Public Enemies, which featured the Bureau’s first director, J. Edgar Hoover, in a supporting role. Some years later, Clint Eastwooddirected a biopic of Hoover starring Leonardo DiCaprio, titled J. Edgar. Now, one of the first movies to dramatize the FBI’s founding is available to stream in the United States on HBO Max, but it won’t be around for much longer.
