Although the Flash is supposed to be the fastest character in all fiction, a select few comic book characters can match the Scarlet Speedster or even outrun him. The mechanics of super-speed grant the Flash near-omnipotence, as a speedster moving at even a fraction of the speed of light is completely untouchable, capable of processing thoughts in nanoseconds, and neutralizing global threats before anyone can even blink. However, all Flash stories need to keep the stakes high, so Flash's abilities need to downgrade accordingly. As a result, a speedster with light-speed reflexes is often ambushed, or caught by slow projectiles, or tripped by basic obstacles, or caught off guard by ordinary street-level villains.
