The Marvel Cinematic Universe set a new precedent for Hollywood, and not just because it produced so many great superhero films. There had been successful comic book adaptations like Spider-Man, X-Men, and The Dark Knight before, but the MCU showed that studios could create an interconnected universe in which characters from different sub-franchises could crossover with one another. The MCU did the work to establish each of its characters beforehand, as audiences who had already seen all of Phase One got to feel the excitement that came with seeing Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) all team up together for the first time in The Avengers, which made each of their solo sequels feel more intriguing.
