The streak of unprecedented success that Warner Bros. achieved in 2025 was tinged with considerable tragedy. While the success was mostly attributed to the chiefs of the studio's film division, they had been tasked not only with delivering hits, but also with indirectly cleansing the studio's image. In recent years, Warner Bros. has attracted plenty of backlash for business decisions deemed anti-art in certain quarters. It began with the studio's controversial decision to release every film on its 2021 slate simultaneously in theaters and on the HBO Max streaming service. This was cited as one of the reasons behind Christopher Nolan's decision to sever ties with the studio and take his business to Universal, where he has achieved greater success. But another of Warner Bros.' most divisive decisions was to shelve a trio of features as tax write-offs.
