28 Years Later: The Bone Temple Trailer Previews Jack O’Connell’s Cult Leader Character

The first trailer for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has been released.

The 28 Days Later franchise began in 2002 with the Danny Boyle-directed movie written by Alex Garland and starring Cillian Murphy. Following the 2007 28 Weeks Later, Boyle and Garland both returned to make 28 Years Later, which was released in theaters this past summer.

Now, Candyman’s Nia DaCosta is directing the next entry in the horror series, titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Another sequel following The Bone Temple is also being planned.

What happens in the 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple trailer?

The 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple trailer picks up shortly where 28 Years Later left off, as Alfie Williams’ Spike character is now forced to join the cult led by Sir Jimmy Crystal, played by Jack O’Connell. Tensions rise when this cult finds itself butting heads with Ralph Fiennes’ Dr. Kelson and the infected Alpha leader Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry).

DaCosta told Rolling Stone about her approach to the movie. “The thing that connects [28 Years Later and The Bone Temple] is that they’re both bonkers, idiosyncratic, and very artistically personal works. My big pitch when I was talking to the producers, including Danny and Alex, before I came on was, ‘I’m going to make this my own. I’m not going to try to make a Danny Boyle movie.’ Because that’s impossible to make. He’s so special. And it didn’t really interest me…It’s so hard to describe the tone of the movie that I actually won’t even attempt to. But it keeps the same unique, off-the-wall, surprising energy.”

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple will be released in United States theaters on January 16, 2026, from Sony Pictures Releasing. 28 Years Later, meanwhile, is currently available to rent or purchase on digital services such as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and more.
