Surreal cinema exists at the edges of logic, dream, and nightmare. It's an offshoot of a broader artistic movement that began after World War I, which focused on the expression of the unconscious. Like the painters who came before them, surreal filmmakers reject traditional narrative coherence in favor of sensation and striking imagery, much to the admiration of some and the confusion of others.
