Sci-fi and action just go together. Once you're already making up new rules for how the world works, why not let people break a few of them in style, guns added. The thrilling part of sci-fi action is usually guns that don't work like real guns, bodies that move way faster than they should, and machines built to end a fight in one hit. None of it needs an excuse once the movie's already asking you to believe in time travel or fake realities.
